Teaching Experience Around the World
Working at Brighton Charter School (now called Eagle Ridge Academy) was my first professional teaching experience. It was truly a daily learning process for me, as this was before I had any professional teacher training. This opportunity taught me to trust my instincts, which often I later learned aligned to best practices, as well as it ignited in me a passion to teach for a career. After teaching 3 subjects (Government, World History and the theater program) as well as overseeing the Student Council for one and half years, I decided it was time to return to college to earn my official teacher’s license.
Jefferson High School is located in downtown Denver, and part of the largest school district in Colorado, Jeffco Schools. This inner city school is composed of students with a wide variety of needs and backgrounds. During my time here, I enjoyed teaching Geography and Civics to grade 9 students. I was also fortunate to be asked to step up and serve as the Freshmen Core Leader (overseeing 8 Freshmen teachers in total). This leadership role required me to oversee horizontal curriculum alignment, innovate positive behavior support strategies as well as oversee initiation and team building workshops for the grade 9 students.
Universal American School was my first adventure within international schools. I was asked to teach IB HL History, World History IB prep for grade 10’s as well as different middle school general Social Studies classes. I was also asked to step up and pioneer the CAS program. While here, I also coached middle school soccer and ran the theater tech program. My time in UAE also afforded me some other great experiences out of the classroom. During these two years, I managed to travel and or drive through many parts of the Middle East. Having such exposure to these parts of the world and different cultures really helped to develop my own awareness of the world.
IBSH was my first school in Asia. The community of IBSH was a very welcoming and supportive one, and I am still grateful for the friendships maintained. While at IBSH, I was asked to teach AP Economics, as well as teaching US History and Geography. I was also asked to step up and assume the role of WASC Coordinator. This was IBSH’s first application for accreditation. I am pleased to say that our accreditation was granted, and the visiting team was impressed with how we embraced the true purpose of international accreditation. It was truly an example of how Eastern and Western cultures can innovate and find strength in our diversity of views.
At ISHCMC American Academy, I was granted my first opportunity of administration. As Dean of Students, it was imperative I set a safe, positive and enjoyable atmosphere so the school community could get to work establishing the our direction. The House program was a great success in setting school-wide culture goals, and celebrating the achievements we made. Our school policies set a firm but fair tone, and all students knew that their best interest was always the main focus. I also enjoyed playing an academic role, teaching courses of MYP History, AP Economics, AP Psychology, World History as well as Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA) Economics.
Working at ISKL was a fantastic opportunity for growth and learning, as this school has a legacy for academic excellence. Teaching only IB DP courses of Economics and Business, the expectations placed on me at a school such as this really demanded me to bring my top potential everyday. I am very proud to say that with results increasing up to an average 5.8 exam score for my IB Business students (based on a total of 40 students in immersed classrooms), my time invested in ISKL has come with great returns. I have also been a support in the strategic development of the Advisory program, taking the lead on a Senior level course unit over being healthy and well-balanced.
Teaching at I-Shou International School marks my return to Taiwan. At I-Shou I taught both DP Economics and DP Business. These class sizes grew since my arrival, with some scores increasing in only 1 year. Along with being a teacher in the classroom, I served as Dept. Chair, currently working to develop and align our curriculum, amongst a few other objectives. I took additional leading roles with being the Extended Essay Coordinator, as well as the MUN Director, hosting our largest MUN conference to date. This has been another great opportunity for me to gain many valuable lessons that I look forward to applying in the future.
